Honeymoon Planning

Wedding and honeymoon planning are so much fun, yet super stressful. With both events taking place at the same time, there is a lot of consider. We ended up getting some help from a travel agent, but still did a ton of research on our own. I read so many Tripadvisor reviews! Youtube wasn't huge yet, but now it's an awesome resource to getting to see hotels and destinations. Here is a great site for honeymoon planning ideas!

If I have any advice for those planning this exciting, romantic vacation, this would be it:

1. Start early! I would probably by airplane tickets 9-12 months out if possible. You'll get the best rates. Plus, the stress from the wedding shouldn't be too intense yet. Everyone doesn't have this option, so if your engagement isn't long, start ASAP!

2. Make a budget. I'm a big budget person. Maybe too much so. But, it definitely helps with travel. I would hate to be concerned about money while on my honeymoon. This is the last time to think about that. There are plenty of way to save cash, here is an awesome list of ways to try to have a free honeymoon or money saving travel tips.

3. Plan together. I've had so many friends disagree on the honeymoon. You have to find a destination and hotel that meets both of your needs. Some types of vacations may not work well together, like a city vacation and beach vacation, but there are ways to try to find a solution. You could have a 2-3 day layover in a city while on your way to a island getaway. Be creative! But make sure you both love your honeymoon travel plans. Now, if you can't afford the type of vacation you want, you really need to be practical and look for ideas to get more bang for your buck.

4. The Hotel! I think the hotel is really one of the most important factors. You're more inclined to stay at your hotel more on your honeymoon and more inside your room ;) so make it special. It might be a better idea to pick a cheaper destination and nicer hotel then a posh destination and stay in a cheap feeling place.

5. Having an amazing time! Relish in this time together. Get a little cheesy! Put that honeymoon couple door hanger outside your door. Tell everyone you meet that it's your honeymoon. Find ways to be intimate that meet your style. Have flowers, Champagne and chocolate sent to the room! This could be an awesome wedding gift if you need a little financial help.

Western U.S. Honeymoons

Maui, Hawaii

For those couples seeking tropical romance, no place is more perfect than Maui. This is a favorite pick for honeymoons! The beaches are amazing, activities abound, outstanding restaurants and much more. You can’t go wrong with any Hawaiian island so shop around. If on a budget, check out vacation rentals, or there are many exquisite hotels, resorts and spas for those with lavish tastes.

Napa Valley or Sonoma County, California

There is nothing more relaxing than a trip to the countryside. California wine country offers a ton of activities and accommodations for couples looking for a weekend getaway or spending some extra quality time. Take a wine tour to find your favorite varietal and enjoy a picnic in a vineyard. Other romantic activities include a hot air balloon ride, hike through the Redwood forest, or discover your favorite restaurant from some of the best.

Other favorite west coast honeymoon destinations are Sedona, Arizona, go experience the magic of the red rocks. Las Vegas, Nevada, every couple needs a little party time. Lake Tahoe, California, whether winter skiing and snuggling in front of a fire or enjoying a mountain hike in the summer, this picturesque destination is sure to please. Central U.S. Honeymoons

Savannah, Georgia

Getting away to a southern favorite, Savannah, is perfect for honeymoon couples seeking a city filled with history and romance, plus a lot of southern charm. Savannah is the perfect city for strolling hand-in-hand through lush streets and quaint neighborhoods. Enjoy the views, shopping and dining on the Riverfront. Discover the many museums, restaurants, and shops, as well as the beautiful Forsyth park in the Historic District. Take a riverboat cruise, a carriage ride and don’t forget to stay up late at your favorite pub. For adventurous couples, cling tightly to each other on an evening walking ghost tour.

Charleston, South Carolina.

Another city full of southern charm, Charleston is an enchanting honeymoon destination. Take a Palmetto Carriage Tour along the beautiful cobblestone streets or dine on a cruise through the Charleston harbor. There are also lots of beautiful historic sites and plantations to keep you busy. Like Savannah, ghost tours are a thrilling way to get to know the city.

Eastern U.S. Honeymoons

Martha's Vineyard

Escape to Martha’s Vineyard for an amazing New England honeymoon. With a casual atmosphere, this quaint destination is great for intimacy after the wedding chaos. With beaches, lighthouses, and picturesque towns, this relaxing vacation spot is all about long walks, stretching out on the sand and gourmet dinners. Enjoy a romantic bike ride around the island and along the coast. Don't forget to splurge on the luxury of Edgartown’s inns, restaurants and shops.

Other favorite Eastern U.S. destination is Cape Cod, pick your favorite walking trail while exploring the Cape. Key West, another great tropical destination for those who love warm weather, white sand beaches, and a lot of water activities. Nantucket, slow down life with this relaxing locale with sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and stunning gardens.

U.S. Territories

For couples that want to get off the mainland, but don’t want the hassle of passports, customs or currency exchange, The U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have the best of both worlds. These amazing destinations invoke the quintessential Caribbean getaway: beautiful beaches, great weather, outstanding resorts, dining and shopping. Shopping on St. Thomas, USVI, is some of the best in the Caribbean and duty-free. Get a touch of history in Christiansted on St. Croix, walking along cobblestone streets and sightseeing at mid 1700’s Danish buildings. Don’t forget to enjoy a kiss at Bourdeaux Point. Puerto Rico also has picture-perfect beaches but also has a lush rainforest, El Yunque for outstanding hiking. You can make it extra special by bringing a picnic lunch and swimsuit for a little couple swimming time in the falls. Descend into the third largest cave system in the world, Rio Camuy Caves, for a romantic walk through the gorgeous stalactites and stalagmites. As nighttime approaches, lights don’t go out at 8pm in Puerto Rico.  Old San Juan is the perfect spot for magical dining, dancing salsa, or an extravagant night out on the town. Honeymoon Registry

I did not use a honeymoon registry. We put most of our honeymoon expenses on credit cards, which was fun to pay off during our first year of marriage. We did use a regular, material registry and obtained many nice things. I am very impressed with how easy it is to set up a honeymoon registry. Now, you don't have to go through a travel agent, you can just sign up online. When people buy airfare, hotel stays, dinners or excursions for you, the registry sends you a chunk of cash!
